packing
for college

Dorm Life can be pretty sweet. You are away from home for the first
time, you can stay out all night, play your music as loud as you want, and
meet many new people that can become life long friends. However, the
Housing Office does not tell you to what to bring for your first adventure
away from your home. This is a list of some essentials that should
keep you both entertained and out of trouble.
10. Condoms Besides their obvious purpose, they make really cool
balloons. However, making animals out of them won't work. Stock up
on them from the Health Center, around Valentines Day, or even at
Saferides.
9. A Picture of Your Family - So you know whom to call when you are
low on cash. It is also a constant reminder as to who is paying your
tuition.
8. Soda, Coffee, or anything else w/ caffeine - If you like to
procrastinate and find yourself writing that term paper at midnight,
something will have to keep you awake while you try to spit out eight
pages by 10:30 am.
7. A Copy of War and Peace - No no no... not to read.
But hey, if that's your cup of tea, go for it. But dorm life is very
social so lots of people leave their doors open so people can just stop
by. War and Peace is heavy enough to keep that door open and
a little more flexible than a brick. Ouch.
6. A Safeway Rewards Card - The Dining Commons is not exactly a
gourmet meal service. So when you are tired of Stir Fry, greasy
tacos, and "Mike's Mystery Meat," (trust me, it's pretty bad),
the extra savings with your Rewards card will help stock your mini fridge
and not blow your budget.
5. Earplugs There is something about the acoustics in the dorms
that tempts every big stereo owner to turn their volume and bass up.
And the sound will resonate throughout the entire floor. You could
ask them to turn it down, but that would be too easy. Instead get
some earplugs to help muffle the sound if you have a test to study for.
4. A Computer with a Network Card When I was in the dorms, they
started using super fast T3 connections for free Internet use. You
could download songs from Napster at lightning speed and keep your Instant
Messenger on all day.
3. A Sweater Sound too obvious? Well if you live in the
dorms, it will come in handy. If you live in Desmond, the fire alarm
will probably be pulled maybe 3 times a month, which requires the hall to
be evacuated, even at 4 am. And no matter how hot it is during the
day, it will be about 5 times colder that night. And something will
have to cover you when you are standing around in your PJs.
2. A Flashlight The dorms are notorious for having
"blackouts." Even when there is no power crisis, power
will just go off at any given moment. So prepare yourself... if I
were you, bring it to the bathroom. There are no windows in the
bathrooms in Desmond and it can get pretty dark.
1.5. Aspirin - For when you had too much fun at that fraternity
party. Get extra strength if your parents are visiting the next day.
1. Shower Sandals These are very, very important. Yes the
cleaning lady washes the showers down with bleach every weekday morning.
However, when the weekend rolls around, the showers can be pretty gross.
And think about it... every person on that floor will be using those
showers. Don't come home with a funky foot virus.
