To
Greek or not to Greek - this is something women will be thinking and
hearing about every fall. Panhellenic Formal Rush is right around
the corner. Now I am sure some of you are asking yourselves if Greek
life is really for you. I mean you have seen the movies, heard the
stories, and watched the television shows about ditzy blonds with funky
letters roaming around campus looking for guys with similar letters.
But I must emphasize that Hollywood likes to exaggerate everything.
That's how they make money. To be honest with you, I never saw
myself as a sorority girl. In high school, I was plagued by the
images from "Revenge of the Nerds" so I didn't want to even
think about rushing. But when I got to Sac State, I decided that
maybe I should give it a shot. So I did, and now I have made some
great friends, have plenty of pictures, stories to tell, participated in
many different charitable events, and met zillions of people. Also,
when you are a freshman and new to the college experience, it is nice to
have an older sister explain the ins and outs of campus life.
If you want to take the plunge and get involved with Sac State's sorority
life, there are some important dates to remember. Informational
nights kind of let you get an idea of what will go on during Formal Rush,
what to wear, what to bring, what to expect. This is also where you
can fill out an application and pay recruitment fees. You can also
fill out an application online at the CSUS Greek Website, under
Sororities. They give a run down of times and answer some important
questions you may have before starting.

There are seven Panhellenic sororities that participate in Formal Rush:
Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta,
Phi Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Kappa. You will be introduced to them all
as the week goes on and Rho Chis, or recruitment advisors, will guide you
so you can make the right decision on choosing a house. As the week
comes to a close, you would have narrowed those seven sororities to maybe
about two or three, which will lead you to Preference Night. This is
where everyone gets all dressed up and where you will have to make your
final decision on what house you would like to join. On the final
day, you may be offered a Bid from one or more of the sororities. You will
spend a semester learning about the sorority and spend a lifetime with
sisterhood, friendship, support, and education.
If of course Formal Rush is not for you, but are still interested in the
Greek System, two other Panhellenic Associate members, Chi Delta and alpha
Kappa Delta Phi, along with many other Greek organizations, hold open rush
events about a week after Formal Rush and have booths in the quad.
These events are not as formal as Formal Rush but still allow you to get
to know the sorority on a one on one basis.
So if you still have questions about a certain sorority, check
out some of the many colorful websites on the CSUS Greek Pages or wait
until the semester starts and ask for more information. They will be
more than happy to answer questions. Go GREEK!
